Game complex debuts to a crowd

The loss of a Cub grocery store could turned into a huge win for Buffalo Grove. If this weekend's grand opening was any indication, eSkape, Buffalo Grove's new family entertainment center, should be right up the village's alley.

The 60,000-square-foot entertainment complex, at 350 McHenry Road in the Town Center, has the makings of quite a Cinderella story. It originally opened as an Eagle grocery store, and, when that failed, tried to make it under the Cub Foods banner. After Cub closed, a group of local residents banded together to convert the failed food store into an entertainment magnet.

"This is the third grand opening I've been to in this building. I hope this will be the last. I'm confident it will be," Buffalo Grove Village President Elliott Hartstein said at Friday night's opening ceremonies.

The corridors were jammed with youths, who tested their skills on the wide array of video games, including virtual reality boxing and motocross racing. Some wandered to the laser tag arena, a cavernous area with black walls splashed with futuristic designs.

"There hasn't really been a place like this ever in Buffalo Grove," said one of the laser taggers, Buffalo Grove teen Jon Schallman.

Others rolled brightly colored balls down the 36 bowling lanes, which feature "high-impact bowling," replete with glow-in-the-dark lanes, ceilings with whirling lights and projection screens.

Likewise jammed was the GrillWorks restaurant and bar, where parents could enjoy themselves while their kids play.

Among those hanging out by the bowling area Friday was Palatine resident Chris Beach. "This is an outstanding setup," Beach said. "You can bring your kids, throw them in laser tag and enjoy yourself bowling. I bet on the weekend it's like this all the time."

One teen, Andrew Kaplan, said, "It's OK for older kids, but they might feel a little out of place with all the younger kids."

But another teen, Barry Glass, said, "Once it gets midnightish and there is no more curfew, I think it's going to be a big hangout for the older kids."
